A celebration of the great Chinese tradition of tapestries and woodworking, in an extremely exclusive, limited-edition violin case made by Dimitri Musafia in just 15 unique examples in Cremona, the city of Stradivari, for musicians and collectors.

The name for China in Mandarin, since the 6th Century B.C., is Zhongguo, which means "nation in the center", and is represented by the two ideograms at the top of this page, here depicted in traditional (i.e. not simplified) Chinese script.

"When designing ZHONGGUO I wanted to capture this essence. Today's common perception of China as a modern economic power mustn't let anyone forget the great Chinese traditions of the past, such as tapestries and woodworking, where painstaking craftsmanship and quality - like in Cremona violin making - were the pride of the artisans and an honor for the owner to behold."

ZHONGGUO is a collection of 15 one-off, unique cases conceived to celebrate this tradition, where the world of Cremona violin and case making meets the materials, techniques, and symbolism typical of this millenniums-old Oriental culture.

The cases pictured on this page are all sold and being unique cannot be reproduced. See "colors" link below for remaining available color combinations. Cases depicted may include optional features requested by the customer.

Each of the 15  ZHONGGUO cases in the collection is thus different from the others, yet united by the concept and the materials. The interior is created by mating the finest Italian silk velvet with original and precious Chinese silk brocade, depicting the traditional Chinese symbols of good luck, fertility, and long life, each in a unique and dramatic chromatic combination. In contrast with the sumptuous silks are the internal wood parts (carved from exotic Ajous, a strong, lightweight wood known for it's resilience and it's heat insulation properties) which are hand-finished with the legendary Chinese lacquer system boasting no less than 10 coats of enamel (either red or black) in the time-honored process that takes three weeks to complete. Actual labor per case exceeds 20 hours. Each example is numbered and offered with certification for musicians and collectors.

Only 15 people in the world will be able to own the ZHONGGUO: Homage to China case by Dimitri Musafia.

We will be accepting orders for only 5 more.
